The average age in California, as well as most of America, is steadily increasing, as we realize a decline in the birth rate and a decline in the mortality rate because of advances in medical science and the aging of "Baby Boomers."
The number of Californians 65 and older is expected to almost double within the next 30 years.
By the year 2020:
- Over 6 million Californians will be over 65 (20% of the population)
- 3 times as many people will be over 80 as today (approximately 1 million!)
- Approximately 40% of those 65 and over have one or more functional limitations that require assistance.
- Almost 60% of persons age 85 and older need assistance.
- The need for assistance increases with the age of the individual
