Life Insurance

You can customize life insurance to fit your needs.

Life insurance comes in two main forms—term and permanent. Term offers a death benefit for a specific period of time and little else. Permanent insurance accumulates a cash value in addition to a death benefit. With either type you can find a wide variety of options and can also choose from extra benefits, called "riders," to customize your plan.

Selecting the right type of life insurance depends on what you want it to do for you. To get the maximum protection for a limited period of time at the lowest initial outlay, the best choice usually is term insurance. On the other hand, permanent insurance makes sense if you want long-term coverage at a predictable premium and a way to accumulate funds for emergencies and future needs or opportunities.

Either way, here are some things you can do to customize your coverage to meet your specific needs by adding "riders" to your policy:
  • Disability Waiver of Premium Chances are greater that you will be disabled rather than die during your working years. With this benefit, the insurance company waives your premiums if you suffer a long-term disability (usually defined as more than six months), so that your policy stays in force while your income is reduced. The waiver of premium is inexpensive and, without question, a good value.
  • Accidental Death Benefit allows you to double or triple the basic face amount of your policy if you die in an accident. Most deaths at any age are from natural rather than accidental causes. Most companies place some restrictions on what qualifies as an accidental death. Typical exceptions are self-inflicted wounds, private aviation accidents, injury while committing a crime, etc.
  • Guaranteed Insurability Option (GIO) permits future purchases without evidence of insurability. You have this option at certain ages for a specified amount. A typical GIO would offer a 30-year-old four more chances to buy up to $35,000 of coverage. That would guarantee another $140,000 of life insurance. GIOs usually run up to age 40.
A variation of the standard GIO offers additional coverage to several business-owner insureds at certain times, based on a business valuation formula. There are also estate conservation GIOs, which permit an upgrade in coverage after the first spouse's death to protect the survivor's portion of the estate.
  • Additional Term Rider (other insured rider) covers another person on your policy, usually a family member or sometimes a business associate. The rider is normally term insurance, but can be attached to either a term or permanent (cash value) policy.
  • Children's Benefit covers minor dependent children living in the insured's household. The face amount is minimal ($5,000 is typical) and can usually be converted at an older age to a personal policy for a multiple of the children's benefit (often five times).
  • Survivor Income We offer several plans that can be tailored to your individual needs, including replacing your lost income to survivors. Discounts for non-smokers and preferred risk classification for qualified individuals.
  • Mortgage/Debt Protection If a breadwinner dies, who makes the house payment? We have plans designed to pay off any type of home mortgage or debt situation in the event of premature death.
  • Short-Term Debt Protection Auto loans, credit card balances, short-term loans... these types of debts don't just go away if the breadwinner dies prematurely. We have short-term coverage at competitive rates.
  • Estate Tax Planning We offer products that can provide needed funds to cover taxes and administrative expenses associated with your estate.
  • Retirement Planning/Tax-Deferred Savings Prepare for the future using our tax-deferred annuity series. We offer competitive interest rates and flexible premium plans—plus higher interest crediting rates for customers. Also suitable for IRAs.
  • Juvenile Insurance Protect future insurability with our special juvenile plan for children ages 0-17. This plan provides automatic options to purchase additional insurance regardless of future changes to their health or occupation.
  • Education Funding It's never too early to begin planning for future education expenses! The cash value of a universal life policy may be accumulated tax-deferred and accessed tax-free at a later date to help with education expenses.
  • Income Protection If you become disabled, who pays the bills? Our disability income coverage allows you to receive a portion of your income should you become totally disabled. Varied benefit periods are ideal for auto and home loans.
  • Last Expenses Regardless of circumstances, we have products suited to provide a sound life insurance foundation for the most basic necessity.
  • Business Interests We have plans available to help you start a business, or help you protect a business. This includes any business's most valuable asset—its people. Whether you're looking for a simplified pension, a 401(k), or a business continuation plan, we have a plan for you.
